00:00If you're anything like me, your favorite makeup items can go through some rough times.
00:08You know, lipsticks that have the top squished down, shattered compacts, or the absolute
00:11worst dried out mascara.
00:13So you just end up tossing it all out and you have to start all over again?
00:17Well, not anymore.
00:18All of those problems are fixable, and here to show us how is a woman who beats my face
00:23to the gods, honey, every day, no, almost every week, for this show, makeup artist Tara
00:28Lauren.
00:29Hi, Dana.
00:30Hi.
00:31I'm so happy that you're here on this side of the camera.
00:33It's a little cool being on this side.
00:35And you're here to show us some super easy beauty hacks, so let's get started.
00:40What do you have first up?
00:41I just mentioned a broken compact, but now this looks tragic.
00:43Okay, a lot of people go through this, okay?
00:45You have your favorite eyeshadow or pressed powder, and it falls on the ground, shambles,
00:50it's shattered.
00:51Regroup, collect yourself, because it can be fixed.
00:53Yes.
00:54Ooh, yes.
00:55Now, what you need is your compact that is in shambles.
00:58Don't cry.
00:59And you want to grab something like, you can use a butter knife.
01:03Okay.
01:04You know, from your kitchen, or because, you know, I got this.
01:07Use a probe.
01:08You doze this.
01:09I'm going to use a spatula.
01:10Okay.
01:11Now, what you want to do is you want to take your spatula and start to break apart the
01:16eyeshadow.
01:17Start working the eyeshadow into, like, try to make it as finely milled as you can.
01:21Oh, so you break it up even more.
01:22Yeah, you want to break it up even more.
01:23Okay.
01:24It's like a powder, as small as you want.
01:26Mm-hmm.
01:27All right?
01:28And then what you're going to do is, as you start to see it come to, like, you know,
01:30a nice powder size.
01:31Mm-hmm.
01:32You don't want it to get too messy, but it can get messy.
01:34You want to take a little bit of rubbing alcohol.
01:37Okay.
01:38It feels good.
01:39You don't have to do it.
01:40This is stuff that you would have in your house.
01:41Yeah, definitely.
01:42You want to take a little bit of alcohol.
01:43I like to take a little bit and add more as I go.
01:45Mm-hmm.
01:46And you want to just drop a few drops on the eyeshadow.
01:49Okay.
01:50Because what we're going to do is we're going to take it from a powder form to a cream form.
01:53Okay.
01:54I'm just going to put this to the side.
01:55Sure.
01:56And then we're going to pick back up our knife or our spatula, and then we're just going
01:59to start to work it into the shadow.
02:02Oh, okay.
02:03To a creamier consistency.
02:04Mm-hmm.
02:05Like I said, it could get a little messy, but you know what?
02:07It's okay.
02:08You're saving a life here.
02:09It's okay to get a little messy.
02:10You're saving a life.
02:11Exactly.
02:12And now what happens?
02:13So then we're going to make it to a creamy consistency, and we're going to start to spread
02:14it out and mold it back into the compact.
02:16Okay.
02:17So we're going to be pressing and shifting and pressing and shifting until it kind of gets
02:20back into the form.
02:21Okay.
02:22And then?
02:23And then, because we're going to keep working into it, we want to take a little paper towel.
02:26All right.
02:27You want to fold it in half or make it small, and you just want to lightly press on top of the
02:31eyeshadow.
02:32This is going to help to not only absorb some of the alcohol that you use, but also kind of assist it
02:36a little bit as getting back into the form.
02:39And this is what we have here.
02:40And this is one that I did yesterday, just for the magic of film.
02:43TV.
02:44Voila.
02:45Have it done already for you guys.
02:46Just let it dry out maybe overnight or an hour or so?
02:48I would suggest doing it overnight just to get the best results.
02:52Just leave it open.
02:53Leave it to the side.
02:54And if you put it far away from me, you won't be urged to touch it and see if it's dry or
02:57not yet.
02:58Got you.
02:59Awesome.
03:00Thank you so much.
03:01Mascara.
03:02So now a lot of women grab their mascara and the first thing they do is they're pumping,
03:05they're getting ready to play it on.
03:08That pumping is actually adding air into the mascara, forming the pigments in the product
03:13inside to dry out.
03:14Okay.
03:15So what are you supposed to do?
03:16Just like swirl it around?
03:17Exactly.
03:18What you want to do is you just want to swirl it in an open, like you just want to swirl
03:20it all around.
03:21That way you're getting the product off the side.
03:23You're getting more bang for your buck because you're incorporating all that product on the
03:26side and on the bottom into the brush.
03:28Okay.
03:29How long are you supposed to keep your mascara?
03:30I would definitely recommend keeping mascara the absolute max, three months.
03:35Now, what you can do is you can remove the brush from the mascara and you can grab some
03:41contact solution.
03:42Okay.
03:43What you want to do is you want to take at least two to three drops inside of your
03:47mascara.
03:48Now we're using contact solution because it's safe for your eyes.
03:52You don't want to use anything like water or a lot of people are saying like oil because
03:56that can actually manipulate the product inside of the mascara.
04:00Okay.
04:01So you want to use something that's safe for your eyes and also this is like saline based,
04:05so it's nice and safe and it's great for the product as well.
04:08And especially if it's by your eyes.
04:09Exactly.
04:10You just want to be careful.
04:11Really careful.
04:12So after we've added the two to three drops, we're going to put back our mascara wand and
04:15we're going to do our circular wand.
04:17The swirl.
04:18Exactly.
04:19Our swirl.
04:20So we're going to swirl it on around, breaking up all those clumps and you know, nobody wants
04:24those spider lashes.
04:25So we're going to work up all those clumps and voila.
04:29Voila.
04:30Fresh mascara.
04:31Awesome.
04:32Awesome.
04:33These are some really, really good tips so far.
04:34The next one though is something that I personally have a lot of difficulty with.
04:37Cleaning your brushes.
04:38Okay.
04:39Like say you've done your daytime look and you've got asked to go out somewhere and you
04:42don't want to use the same colors that you use during the day.
04:44So you just want to clean your brushes really quick so you can add a fresh application.
04:47So what we're going to do here is we're going to make our own brush cleaner.
04:50Okay.
04:51We are going to use some simple products.
04:53We're going to first use water.
04:54Okay.
04:55Now I'm going to make a small batch here just so we can, you know, see how it goes.
04:58We're going to add water.
04:59You can use about four to six ounces of water, purified water.
05:03So like bottled water.
05:05Then you want to add a couple of tablespoons of alcohol.
05:10So I would use probably about two to three tablespoons of alcohol.
05:14Okay.
05:15You want to add that.
05:16Again, flying around the house.
05:17Exactly.
05:18Alcohol seems to be our close personal friend right now.
05:20You know, it keeps you clean.
05:21It keeps you clean.
05:22Then you want to take a tablespoon of your favorite shampoo.
05:25Again, shampoo is great because our brushes are hair.
05:30So we want to treat them, you know, we want to treat them fairly good.
05:33So what you want to do is you want to take about a tablespoon of your favorite shampoo.
05:37This will help you keep your brushes longer, right?
05:39Exactly.
05:40I'll have to think of it like sometimes your brushes are like your cashmere source.
05:42So after we take that tablespoon of shampoo, we are going to, this is actually my favorite part.
05:48This is my favorite part because I can smell it already.
05:50Um, I like to use essential oils inside of my brush cleaner because not only are they, not only do they smell amazing, they actually, some of them have antibacterial properties.
06:01Which is perfect.
06:02Which is great for cleaning your brushes.
06:03Especially on your face.
06:04Exactly.
06:05Then you want to add two to three drops.
06:06I'm going to use some lavender here.
06:08Which is my personal favorite.
06:10And then I'm going to use a little bit of peppermint.
06:13Okay.
06:14Okay.
06:15And now we just have to stir this up.
06:17How does this work?
06:18What I like to do is I like to put it in a spray bottle like the one that I made here.
06:21Yes.
06:22So you can just put it in your spray bottle, shake it up a little bit.
06:24Uh huh.
06:25You want to use a paper towel, a clean paper towel, press your blush on, your brush on top.
06:28Uh huh.
06:29Give it a couple of sprays.
06:31And it smells amazing.
06:33And then you just want to wish it around, wish it around.
06:35You see that coming off?
06:36Yeah.
06:37But I still do recommend washing your brushes, personal, once a week if you're using on somebody
06:43else after every application.
06:44And now the next one is something that I have a huge issue with.
06:48Because I don't know if you've noticed Essence Live, I don't have any hair.
06:51Pause.
06:52So I like to wear a lip quite a bit.
06:55But I'm often breaking my lipsticks.
06:57Okay.
06:58This is another common thing too.
06:59So how do I save my favorite lipstick?
07:00Okay.
07:01Now what you want to do is you want to take your lipstick.
07:04That has broken.
07:05A lot of times lipsticks break like close to the base, which is a good thing.
07:09Right.
07:10So what you want to do is you want to take the broken piece and just lay it down for
07:14a second.
07:15Okay.
07:16So what you want to do is you want to take the end of the lipstick where we took out
07:20the broken part.
07:21So the base.
07:22Exactly.
07:23And you want to get like a hair dryer.
07:24And you want to put it on probably warm.
07:26And I like to put it on warm low.
07:28Uh huh.
07:29And then you want to run it over the top of the lipstick.
07:31Now we don't want to melt it completely.
07:32We just want to get it to like a, you know, a little bit of a.
07:35Like a goo.
07:36Exactly.
07:37Okay.
07:38Not too gooey.
07:39Just kind of like loosen it up a little bit.
07:40Okay.
07:41So we're going to put it on.
07:42Oh, we're blowing our napkins.
07:45All right.
07:46We got action on the side today.
07:48That's what's live.
07:49And then what you're going to do is as it's in this, you're going to see it melt a
07:51little bit.
07:52What you're going to do is you're going to take that broken piece and you're going to enter
07:55it back into the top.
07:57Now you're going to notice that a little bit of lipstick may come out the side.
08:01Sure.
08:02It's okay.
08:03Take your clean hands and just slightly rub it around.
08:05Oh, look at that.
08:06And it's all back together.
08:07Exactly.
08:08But you don't want to use it right away.
08:09Right.
08:10I know you're probably really excited to probably use it right away.
08:12What you want to do is you want to kind of put it up and let it dry and let it mend.
08:16Or if you want to use it like in the next couple of hours, you can just throw it in your fridge.
08:20And then by the time you're ready, you'll be able to use it again.
08:23Your lips will be popping.
08:24Yes.
08:25All right.
08:26And so I did one right here.
08:27Okay.
08:28Just to kind of get a view of how you're getting your lipstick back.
08:30That's perfect.
08:31And now we have one last hack that features our Essence Beauty Box.
08:35Okay.
08:36All right.
08:37This is our April Beauty Box.
08:38And inside, what do we have?
08:39Now, the Palmer's swivel stick is like a life stick.
08:43Which I live by the cocoa butter.
08:44Like, I feel like every woman needs to have one in her purse.
08:46Yes.
08:47Okay.
08:48Now, you can do everything from mints from hydrate your lips.
08:51You can use it as a cuticle oil.
08:52You can hit your elbows if you need it.
08:55Just saying.
08:56But another thing you can do is you can do one of the modern makeup looks, the dewy eye.
09:01Oh, nice.
09:02What you want to do is you want to take your finger and you want to just rub it, rub it,
09:07rub it, rub it on top.
09:08Mm-hmm.
09:09And then you want to start to press it into your lip.
09:14Now, what's the difference between the dewy eye and I've been in the gym too long and got
09:18my life eye?
09:19Well, you want to do like a nice shimmer.
09:21Now, I'm just going to work this in.
09:22Oh.
09:23And you're going to see like it's a nice little shimmer.
09:24Oh, yeah.
09:25Like a little glow.
09:26Yeah.
09:27Remember, you have natural oils in your eyelids already.
09:28So once they start to work together, it's going to give you a nice, silky, glistening
09:33eyelid that doesn't look oily or greasy.
09:34Is that with or without eyeshadow?
09:36I would recommend without eyeshadow.
09:38You won't even need that much.
09:39Just a little bit of this and your mascara will help them nicely pop and open your eyes.
09:45To make people think you woke up like that.
09:46Exactly.
09:47Mm-hmm.
09:48Tara, thank you so very much for all of those tips and tricks.
09:50No problem.
09:51But I'm certainly going to try.
09:52And if you're not subscribed to the Essence Beauty Box, I suggest you do so.
