00:00The full trade, the Boston Red Sox find their third baseman, Caleb Durbin, along with Andrew Monasterio, Anthony Siegler, and the 67th overall pick, it's a competitive balance round B pick, will go from Milwaukee to Boston for Kyle Harrison, David Hamilton, and Shane Drohan.
00:17Kyle Harrison was the marquee pitching prospect that was moved in the Rafi Devers deal from San Francisco to Boston, and now he is rerouted through Worcester, because he never threw for the Boston Red Sox.
00:30He goes from Worcester to Milwaukee. It's an interesting trade. I guess I want your immediate Red Sox thought, and then we'll pivot to the Brewer thought.
00:39My immediate Red Sox thought is, how is the fit going to work in Boston with Caleb Durbin? Because last year, he kind of burst onto the scene, he posted an OPS, you know, in the low to mid 700s, but put up a 2.6 F war, because he's a solid defender, he's a really good base runner, and the quality of contact, right, he doesn't hit the ball very hard, but he combines that with elite plate discipline, and he gets the most out of that contact.
01:05And when I look at his profile, and how it's going to fit at Fenway Park, I can't help but notice, if he played every single game, all 136, at Fenway Park last year, baseball savant says he would have hit only five home runs at Fenway.
01:24However, that might make Red Sox fans cringe a little bit and say, oh, what did we just get? He pulls the ball in the air a lot, but it's a lot of low line drives.
01:34What does that make me think? He had 25 doubles last year. I think he could be a 35 double guy. That's the type of player I think the Red Sox are bringing in, is one of these just scavengers, right, like a real tough ball player who led the National League and hit by pitches last year.
01:53He had 24 hit by pitches and 30 walks. Isn't that a crazy stat? And he's also always had an innate ability to get hit with pitches. Look at his minor league numbers consistently getting hit by pitches.
02:07This is a grinder. The Red Sox brought in a pretty solid player.
02:11He's kind of got like this, you know, cool backstory. I wasn't going to say ragtag, but kind of this, this, you know, bootstrapping your way through the baseball journey.
02:21Caleb Durbin does. He was a Wash U guy. He was a D3 baseball player. He's got a wrestling background, and you understand why.
02:27I think he's 5'7 on his best day. That is a short guy, but a short king. And Caleb Durbin, homers are not going to be his game. His game is going to be maybe 35 doubles off the monster at Fenway or maybe into the gap.
02:39It's going to be swiping a bunch of bags if everything lines up. This guy was a speed demon in the Arizona Fall League in 2024.
02:46The other thing is defense. You know that you are getting a sure-handed defender at third base pretty much every day if you're the Boston Red Sox.
02:54And this guy was top 10 among third basemen last year in fielding run value. So you get a good defender with five years of club control.
03:02The way that I took this in for the Boston Red Sox, and like, you know, the other pieces are cool.
03:07The funny meme-able thing is if you looked at fan graphs and saw the depth chart at third base for the Milwaukee Brewers,
03:13the Red Sox just took all three of them. It was Durbin, it was Siegler, and it was Monasterio, which I can appreciate.
03:18They want that third base depth. For the Red Sox, I thought that this was an interesting pivot from what I perceived the ideal third base situation to be.
03:27I think at the beginning of the offseason, everybody was saying Bregman's the ideal fit at third.
03:32And yes, like 100%, that would have worked well. He got $175 million from the Cubs.
03:38Plan B was probably go and get Isak Paredes from Houston, and we saw reports about their interest there.
03:45We saw reports about framework for a trade there.
03:49Paredes is a guy that is a top 10 third baseman in the game, according to us, as recently as last week,
03:54that probably has a little bit more power potential and offensive potential.
03:59But what they identified is, unlike Paredes, who only has two years of control and is already making about $10 million,
04:05they found a guy who's on the league minimum for the next two years and has five years of control
04:10that they feel like will hold it down defensively at third base and be a good bat for them in the seven hole
04:15or the eight hole of their lineup.
04:17What does this mean for Marcella Meyer? Probably more second base reps.
04:20What does this mean for Christian Campbell? Who the heck knows?
04:23They needed to get an answer for opening day at third base, one of third base or second base,
04:28and it seems like they have their answer.
04:29Speaking about Marcella Meyer and speaking about trades, Alex Spire of the Boston Globe reported earlier
04:37that the Red Sox and the Diamondbacks were close to a deal for Cattell Marte
04:42where they were willing to part with top prospect Franklin Arias and Peyton Tolley or Connelly early.
04:48That was basically the crux of the deal.
04:51But talks broke down when the Diamondbacks said they wanted Marcella Meyer.
04:55I'm confused by that.
05:00And I think a big reason why is, if you felt that Meyer was not your third baseman of the future,
05:09why would that be the name to stop you from going to get Cattell Marte?
