More walls in your home are good and you should actually have marble in your kitchen…at least according to a few home experts with piping hot takes. In this video, Real Simple gets a group of home designers to give their most controversial opinions on home decor.

00:00My most controversial decorating opinion is that books can be turned backwards, but hear me out.
00:06If it's a decorative moment, it doesn't freaking matter. Like people are always like, oh my gosh,
00:10you can't turn the books around. Nobody's going to know what the spine says. It doesn't matter.
00:14Like go to the dollar store, go to a thrift store, get some old books and put it on a
00:19shelf and shut
00:20up. Truly my most controversial design opinion is the fact that I like to add walls instead of
00:24take them out. It sometimes horrifies our clients, but I just think rooms need to be revealed as you
00:29walk through. People are really into open floor plans because they think it makes everything feel
00:33bigger. But sometimes what you end up with is a lot of dead space that you can't really use. So
00:38I definitely think that walls are important. Separation is needed. It's just better for
00:42furniture placement. You can actually do something on the ceiling because it doesn't continue
00:46throughout the space. It's kind of like a little mystery. You walk through and you turn a corner
00:51and like, aha, there's this room. So it adds to like the overall ambiance of the house.
00:56We don't ever feel like we need to make a historic home a period piece. We don't need
01:01to move furniture in that fits the original era of the house. We don't need to put a kitchen
01:06in that looks like it belongs in the 1880s or even traditional looking kitchen. So we don't
01:11mind putting ultra modern furniture in sleek Scandinavian kitchens, you know, in an old
01:17Brooklyn historic home. So we really love that. And that's why our clients seek us out. Some
01:21people are more preservationists and purists about things. And that's just not how we rule.
01:26So my most controversial design opinion, colors shouldn't match using complementary colors. And
01:34even if they're not explicitly complementary on the color wheel, just using colors that
01:38complement each other. Or, you know, if you're going to use green, like pulling in a bunch of
01:42different greens versus matching. I don't like anything matching. You know, it comes to color or
01:47anything else for that matter. Like the only thing I think I'm okay with matching is like
01:52nightstands.
01:52Probably that I like the big light. There was this whole thing on Instagram where they like,
01:58don't ever, ever, ever use the big light. Like just use the lamps and the ambient lighting and so on.
02:03I like the big light, especially if it's a chandelier you love. Like let's turn it on. If we're
02:08going to buy it, let's use it.
02:10I think my most controversial design decision is that I love to use marble in kitchens, right?
02:14Marble's super porous. It's not great for families and kitchens, but I found this UV coating that you
02:20can put on the top and it makes it so it's really durable. So yeah, people, they shy away from
02:25it,
02:25but then they hear me say it and they're like, let's do it.
