00:00Sigh...
00:01Look...
00:02I know this is...
00:04a terrible shock.
00:06But we need to be on the same page.
00:09Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're looking at video game endings from 2020 to 2026 that left us feeling dissatisfied
00:17or flat-out disappointed.
00:19Naturally, there will be plenty of spoilers ahead.
00:22Don't you know, Brainiac? Anything's possible with a little help from your friends!
00:27Thought he meant us for a second, but of course he meant bats!
00:32Kapow!
00:33But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the
00:38bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:42Deathloop
00:43Did it ever occur to you that I always wake up first?
00:46So if we survive the collapse of the loop, you'll wake up with the barrel of my gun in your
00:51mouth.
00:51While Deathloop has its strong points, the story leaves a bit to be desired.
00:55And that's especially the case with the ending.
00:58Arkane's inventive time-loop shooter had players plotting the perfect assassination run across Black Reef,
01:04piecing together the history of the island and yourself along the way.
01:08When you finally pull it off, the ending boils down to a choice that ultimately feels thin and hollow, given
01:14everything you've just experienced.
01:15You can spare Juliana, your twist-revealed daughter who's been hunting you the whole game for justifiable reasons,
01:22in which case you team up to live on through the loops.
01:28You know, for a second you almost had me.
01:32If you kill her and try to break the loop, but not yourself, you're trapped in the loop alone.
01:37If both Juliana and Colt die, you wake up, with Juliana leaving you to brave the apocalyptic-looking landscape by
01:44yourself.
01:49It, uh, worked?
01:52Either way, it cuts to black before exploring either outcomes.
01:56The devs had to release an update for this ending to try and make it feel less empty.
02:00With how much planning you have to do to get here, we expected something a little less ambiguous.
02:14Mortal Kombat 1
02:16Don't the rainbow colors on these mountains just scream Outworld?
02:20I cannot believe you'll be telling our story about how we defeated Shang Tsung.
02:26Rebooting your universe can come with certain consequences, even from within the universe itself.
02:31Mortal Kombat 1 promised a fresh timeline under Liu Kang's watchful eye,
02:36and for a while it was genuinely fun seeing the story's fresh ideas.
02:40But when the climax arrives and Titan Shang Tsung is finally confronted,
02:44everything the story had built up is thrown out the window in favor of a multiversal brawl.
03:02It's pure spectacle over substance.
03:04Instead of payoffs for the character plotlines we had been following,
03:08it's a mishmash of ideas thrown into a blender and justified by the multiverse.
03:13It's loud, messy, and rushed, but still takes a moment to set up the future paid DLC.
03:19It's an unfortunate pivot given the grounded Outworld-based plot taking up the majority of the story.
03:25It's unfortunate it all ended so fast.
03:32The next time, it won't.
03:36Hell is Us
03:50Rogue Factor's Hell is Us is an atmospheric, mystery-drenched action-adventure game,
03:55and it does a great job pulling you into its world.
03:58But when the credits finally roll, it feels like you haven't finished exploring that world.
04:03Far from it.
04:04After reliving his experiences in a war-torn, supernatural-entity-infested country,
04:10Remy is rescued from his captors by his mother, who faked her own death.
04:14Did he lie about anything?
04:17Yes.
04:18Oh, really?
04:19What did he lie about?
04:21I'm still alive.
04:25It ends abruptly after that, with a lot of the interesting lore previously set up,
04:30particularly with the Eye of God being left unexplored.
04:35Where are we going?
04:37Home.
04:38It all feels incredibly rushed through, positioned as the first chapter to a larger story.
04:44It had us in its clutches, and then chose to go with sequel bait.
04:48The Callisto Protocol
04:51No!
04:52You don't know what you're doing!
04:54I didn't!
04:56But I do now!
05:00I can't keep running from what I've done!
05:02There was a lot of pressure on the Callisto Protocol, Glenn Showfield's spiritual follow-up to Dead Space.
05:09And there are several ways in which it failed to live up to it.
05:12Jacob Lee's journey through the Black Iron prison may have shown some promise in its story at certain points,
05:18if not its gameplay loop,
05:19but the abrupt DLC baiting finale feels like a slap across the face.
05:25After the final boss encounter and getting your friend Danny to an escape pod,
05:29you're told there might be another way out,
05:31before that final boss pops out for a jump scare and the game cuts to black.
05:36But I'm going to need your help.
05:42As if that weren't bad enough, the Final Transmission DLC reveals Jacob survived,
05:48has you go through an entire escape plan, only to reveal that was a dying dream.
05:54A second offence given to any player who bothered to venture this far.
05:58Jacob.
06:00You did it.
06:04And now...
06:08Your fight is done.
06:12Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
06:19Take this to hell with you, Captain.
06:21Never bury your enemies alive.
06:23The campaign of Modern Warfare 3 was criticized by, well, basically everyone, for being far too short.
06:30While it had the unenviable task of concluding the trilogy's rebooted storyline, or so we thought,
06:35it not only failed to stick the landing, it arguably retroactively dimmed some of the goodwill earned by its predecessors.
06:42It ends with the death of Soap, one of the franchise's most beloved characters, at the hands of Makarov.
06:55And after scattering his ashes, that's it.
06:58It feels much more like a midpoint than an ending.
07:02Even the post-credits scene with Price assassinating Shepard feels unearned.
07:07No, I am not gonna beg for my life.
07:11Not from you, or anybody else, Captain.
07:17Wouldn't do you any good.
07:19Where the members of Task Force 141 and their villains were treated with surprising depth in their original iteration,
07:26that's the opposite case here.
07:28It's all empty, and a sad follow-up to the original trilogy.
07:32The Dark Pictures Anthology, Little Hope.
07:35Oh, don't get me wrong.
07:37I'm so happy we all made it out of here.
07:40But?
07:42My ass is so getting fired tomorrow.
07:44Supermassive's second entry in the Dark Pictures Anthology is, for the most part,
07:49a creepy little tale set in a town with ties to the Salem Witch Trials, where you're hunted by demonic
07:55creatures.
07:55Like the studio's previous games, it gives you decisions you think will matter,
08:00but the ending makes it abundantly clear that none of them do.
08:04That's gonna haunt me forever.
08:06You're not alone here.
08:08Take it easy on yourself.
08:09You've all been through hell.
08:10You're finally getting out of this hell.
08:11You can't blame yourself.
08:14It's revealed that everyone who survived the bus crash at the start of the game,
08:18and even the creatures themselves, were hallucinations of the bus driver,
08:23brought on by his survivor's guilt from being the only one left alive from the fire that killed his family,
08:28as shown in the game's prologue.
08:30The ending erases the stakes of every decision you made throughout the game,
08:35and invalidates player agency rather than honoring it.
08:39Excuse me, but we're looking for our bus driver.
08:42What?
08:43Have you seen him?
08:48Yeah, that's funny.
08:49Mind's Eye.
08:53I see it now!
08:57I know what I have to do!
08:59There are so many other problems with Mind's Eye,
09:03there's no way a good ending would have saved it.
09:05Nevertheless, it has a bad one.
09:07As the rogue Silva bots open a portal to the world of the Kin,
09:11it's perfectly set up for Jacob to play martyr and sacrifice himself to save Earth from invasion.
09:17How do we stop this?
09:18My DNA!
09:20I'm Kin, right?
09:22Theoretically!
09:25It's supposed to feel emotional and impactful, but none of this feels earned.
09:31And with no body, it's set up for his return in a sequel.
09:34This belief that players would want more of this is enforced by a post-credits tease as a robot rises
09:40back up.
09:41Yeah?
09:50It's a cheap setup, and it doesn't help that it arrived at the end of a campaign already strained by
09:55technical issues and pacing problems.
09:58Redfall
10:08Sadly, Arcane appears for a second time on the list.
10:11For anyone who could get through the broken mess that was Redfall, we commend you,
10:16especially since the finale was so underwhelming.
10:19You've got one vampire god left to defeat, the Black Sun, who should pose a promising threat as the final
10:25boss.
10:26Turns out, she does not.
10:28You go to three points in the arena, hold one button, and she goes down.
10:35It's over.
10:36No more eclipse.
10:38The boss is far too short to be believable as the final threat, and the ending is even shorter.
10:44With her gone, so goes the eclipse over Redfall, and most of the vampires are left to run.
10:50The expectations were low, but something this anticlimactic is almost laughable.
10:56You wouldn't let them.
11:00And now they're running scared.
11:03Twelve Minutes
11:06Look, I know this is a terrible shock, but we need to be on the same page.
11:13In retrospect, anything that Twelve Minutes could have been remembered for, like its time-loop structure used to unravel a
11:21mystery,
11:22or its stacked cast of James McAvoy, Daisy Ridley, and Willem Dafoe, has now been completely overshadowed by its awful
11:29shock-twist ending.
11:34It is revealed that not only did you kill your wife's father, a murder she's accused of at the start
11:40of the game, but that he was also your father.
11:43Is that the nanny that he had the affair with?
11:46Oh, yes!
11:49Dahlia!
11:49Yep, repressed memories reveal you're in a relationship with your half-sister.
11:54The reveal doesn't feel daring or provocative.
11:57It feels like a shocking narrative choice made for shock's sake.
12:01There's no lead-up to this either, making it completely jarring when placed within the narrative context.
12:06These feelings for my daughter.
12:09Your sister.
12:13Look, I...
12:15This isn't how I wanted to tell you.
12:18If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence.
12:23Just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence.com.
12:26Terrible Influence is a satirical board game about the dark side of fame from the writer of the most popular
12:31girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
12:33Boom.
12:34I can make an apology video.
12:36Oh, you so would.
12:37Click on the link in the description to check out the game and be the first to play Terrible Influence.
12:42Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League.
12:45Do you plan to carry him the entire way to Earth-1?
12:51Who says I can't?
12:56Kill the Justice League is another game whose problems far extend the boundaries of the narrative.
13:02Yet, its ending still fully deserves to be here.
13:05Although you end up defeating Brainiac, you learn there are multiple other versions of him scattered throughout the multiverse, which
13:12are also now in need of stopping.
13:14Once you've defeated all 13 Brainiacs?
13:18Yes.
13:20You mean 12!
13:21The story has already been widely criticized for mishandling its characters, so the audacity to set up further plotlines through
13:29DLC was pretty gutsy.
13:32That was bad enough.
13:33The game got four post-launch seasons as you hunted down the other Brainiacs.
13:38And when you finally finished things up, the game revealed the members of the Justice League you had killed were
13:44only clones, making the entire thing pointless anyway.
13:48So how'd we figure out Brainiac had cloned the League?
13:51We were like, there were clones?
13:55Anyway, heh heh, we totally laid it out.
13:58Did you reach any of these disappointing conclusions?
14:01What's the worst ending you've seen in a game this decade?
14:04Share your thoughts in the comments, and we'll see you next time.
