00:08Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're taking a look at the 20 toughest bosses in Cuphead.
00:22Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to MojoPlays and ring the
00:27bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:31Hilda Berg
00:40For some players, Hilda Berg might be tougher than some of the bosses on Inkwell Isle 1.
00:45The primary reason for this is because you have to fight her in a manner more akin to bullet hell
00:50shooters like Ikaruga.
00:52But the projectiles will be the least of your worries, as Hilda can morph into other creatures that each have
00:58their own attack patterns.
01:00So, her switching to Gemini or Sagittarius when you've kept fighting her Taurus form might throw you off your game.
01:06As for her final phase, just try to identify when you can fly under her UFOs, and you shouldn't have
01:12too much of a hassle to end things.
01:28At first, Baroness Von Bon Bon isn't super oppressive during her first phase.
01:33Whether she sends out Greedy Gumball, Weasley Waffle, Lord Gumpacker, or two other candy creatures, this phase shouldn't be too
01:41much of a struggle, as her minions have very simple attack patterns.
01:45It's when the Baroness breaks out her candy cane shotgun that you should start being extra careful.
01:51It'll be easier to become too focused on her sugary henchmen while she's blasting projectiles at you.
01:57So, you'll have to prioritize your shots between the sweets and her.
02:00Plus, you're going to need as much health as possible to deal with her final phase.
02:05That honing head and the rolling peppermint can become a deadly duo.
02:23When it comes to the dogfighting dogs known as the Howling Aces, they can be a real pain in the
02:30neck.
02:30At the very start of the fight, you may find it difficult to avoid their fire because of your limited
02:35movement.
02:35The plane holding you will follow you to where you want to go, but it will only do so at
02:40a snail's pace.
02:41So, you kind of have to guide it before you start making wild maneuvers.
02:45And hopefully, you can adjust to alternate perspectives, because once Sergeant O'Fara flies in, the screen will begin rotating
02:52between her cycles.
02:54Heck, you may even find their secret phase to be a bit more doable.
02:57That is, if you can handle falling pineapples and even more honing fire hydrant rockets.
03:03Cagney Carnation
03:10The ghastly living garden you see before you is perhaps the second hardest boss of all of Inkwell Isle 1.
03:17Admittedly, Cagney's first phase isn't anything to be too worried about.
03:21Just watch out for when he's preparing to attack the top or bottom half of the screen.
03:25The real cause for concern is his second phase, where you are limited to jumping between three platforms.
03:31It is here when Cagney starts getting more aggressive and tries to limit your space.
03:37And yes, this can get overwhelming very quickly.
03:40Just try to be patient, take your shots when you can, and focus on avoiding those spiked vines.
03:51Mortimer Freeze
04:02Much like Cagney Carnation, Mortimer Freeze is fairly easy to take on during his first phase,
04:07as he simply flies back and forth and sends out tiny minions.
04:11The little guys are super fragile, so don't sweat over them.
04:15Even Mortimer's second phase, the one where he turns into a snow monster, isn't anything super complicated.
04:20But once he becomes a giant snowflake and starts shooting out electrified eyeballs,
04:25well, we start getting flashbacks to a certain smoky dragon.
04:30Positioning becomes insanely tricky here, especially when we're trying to maintain a steady flow of bullets.
04:35But trust us when we say that Mortimer is nothing compared to the other DLC bosses.
04:41Esther Winchester
04:43From the very beginning, Esther Winchester is playing with your expectations.
04:48This saloon-housed cattle can create serpents from misfired inkblots
04:52while wrangling in stretching cacti from behind you.
04:56And you are really going to have to keep an eye on your six,
04:58as her second phase will continue pulling in projectiles from the other side of the screen.
05:03Thankfully, this nightmare of a boss fight calms down a bit once she becomes a can of sausages.
05:09All you'll have to worry about here are the openings between the links
05:12and finding openings between Esther's pepper shots.
05:21Sally Stage Play
05:31Whereas Baroness Von Bonbon hides in her candy-coated castle like a coward,
05:36Sally Stage Play joins her cronies in the fight.
05:39And surprisingly, it does make for a chaotic tussle.
05:43Once you've gotten through the wedding phase of the fight,
05:45the difficulty ramps up as all kinds of different props and stagehands start moving around the screen.
05:51If you somehow manage to survive that, you'll have to endure her Demon God phase,
05:56where she will utilize attacks that take up a ton of room.
05:59Her final phase will involve the spinning umbrella that will follow you around the stage,
06:04but a handful of shots will take out Sally rather quickly.
06:12Captain Brineybeard
06:21The Bluto-like Captain Brineybeard is among the first bosses you'll encounter in Inkwell Isle 3,
06:28and he's among the first to show just how hard Cuphead really is.
06:32There are so many different attacks and projectiles to worry about between the dangling barrel from the top of the
06:37screen
06:38to the sea puppers to the cannonballs spewed from Brineybeard's ship.
06:42Do we even need to mention the kraken that joins in on the fight midway through?
06:46Whose side are you really on?
06:48Our advice?
06:49Save your supers for as long as you can before unloading.
06:52The final phase isn't super hard anyways,
06:54so use them once you see the kraken appearing.
07:04Wally Warbles
07:15Yeah, the dogfighting bosses don't ever get easier,
07:19and Wally Warbles is one that is sure to give most players a migraine.
07:23In addition to hacking out eggs that split into piercing fragments,
07:27Wally's got an entire army of needle-armed baby chicks to assist him,
07:32and he can even unleash a flurry of ferociously sharp feathers.
07:35His second phase won't be as unforgiving,
07:38assuming you can easily navigate around Baby Willie's spiked eggs.
07:42But it's the injured Wally you'll have to worry about,
07:45as he and the medic birds will try to corner you with projectiles.
07:48Remain calm, and you'll hopefully not be too battered by the end of this?
07:57Chef Saltbaker
07:58Out of all of the DLC bosses, of course Chef Saltbaker is the toughest of the bunch.
08:05The psychotic cook is prepared to take you out with all kinds of harmful ingredients during phase 1,
08:11and once he's got you in his hands, things will get way more overwhelming than they were before.
08:16Even after suffering from a few knots of pepper,
08:19you'll have to vanquish the chef from within his own sodium-fueled soul.
08:23Perhaps you won't struggle with the dancers too much,
08:25but that platforming finale is certainly a doozy.
08:37Ribby and Croats
08:45These two bosses are arguably the hardest of the Inkwell Isle bosses,
08:49as you're fighting two enemies at the same time.
08:52Thankfully, they share a single health bar, so there's that.
08:56Most will find the first phase easy, and we have to agree.
08:58All you have to do is avoid the hadoukens and parry on occasion.
09:02But when Croats hops to the other side of the screen, it gets overwhelming.
09:11You got two big frogs firing off from both sides of the screen, with one pushing you into the other.
09:17However, the street-fighting amphibians crank up the difficulty in their third phase,
09:21where they morph into a giant slot machine.
09:23At this point, you'll have to play their sick game,
09:26and parry the crank as you anticipate what kind of attack they're dishing out next.
09:35Jimmy the Great
09:36Of all the bosses that force us into airplane controls,
09:46Jimmy the Great is the one that is the most headache-inducing.
09:49Wally Warbles has given folks problems, too,
09:51but at least the bird only has three phases like most of Cuphead's boss fights.
09:56Jimmy, on the other hand, has five phases,
09:59plus a secret phase you can access under certain conditions before phase four.
10:10Because of the chaos throughout the fight,
10:12it can feel like these five phases make the boss fight last an eternity compared to the length of the
10:17others.
10:17This will most likely add on to the stress inflicted by his guessing-game-style attacks.
10:22Seriously, we'd shatter that damn chest of his if we could.
10:31Beppy the Clown
10:39Beppy is a frightening boss,
10:41and we aren't just saying that because he's a creepy clown,
10:43though he does put on a maniacal and disturbing appearance.
10:46No, Beppy is frightening in how he harasses you throughout the fight.
10:50There are no funnel cakes or fried Twinkies or carnival rides here, only death.
11:03Lasting four phases, he'll try to mow you down with bumper cars, carousel horses, roller coasters,
11:08and worst of all, deadly balloons of death.
11:12It all leads up to Beppy transforming into a chair swing of nightmares,
11:16where he sends baseball-fanatic penguins after you.
11:19If you've managed to no-damage run this clown, well, mad props to you, really.
11:24I'm gonna commend you for that.
11:30The Phantom Express
11:38Speaking of nightmares, the Phantom Express might chill you to the bone with its ghostly appearance.
11:43Much like the group of garden fools known as the Root Pack,
11:47the Phantom Express features a group of mini-bosses,
11:49each with their own bag of tricks to trip you up.
11:52The Blind Spectre is a pain with its bouncing eyeballs,
11:55while the Conductor will try to stop you in your tracks by crushing you with his bony palms.
11:59The Lollipop Ghouls, eh, they may not give you too many problems,
12:03but once you reach the train itself, things get cumbersome.
12:13The only way to defeat the train is by attacking the core,
12:16which is protected by a grate that can only be opened with a parry to the tail.
12:19You'll only have a short amount of time to attack before it closes,
12:23and you'll have to repeat the steps again,
12:24all while avoiding projectiles,
12:27which can only be done properly when moving the handrail car,
12:30which can only be moved by parrying the ends of it.
12:33There's so many steps and so much you have to worry about
12:36that it makes the Phantom Express be a test of endurance.
12:47Calamaria
12:54So, we can all agree that Calamaria, I mean, she's a total babe, right?
13:00Like, I mean, look at those thick mermaid hips.
13:04Well, the cute and sexy appearance doesn't last too long.
13:07This isn't a mermaid we're dealing with,
13:09this is a Gorgon,
13:10and she's packed with all kinds of dirty tricks.
13:13Not that level of dirty either, get your mind out of the gutter.
13:21Kala doesn't give you a lot of room to breathe during her second and third phases.
13:25Her attacks will congest the screen with bullets and rays that will turn you to stone.
13:30She will try her damn hardest to overwhelm you,
13:33and whereas Jimmy has a phase where a portion of the screen has a safe space,
13:37Calamaria just doesn't.
13:45King Dice
13:52He's Mr. King Dice
13:55He's the gamest in the land
13:57He never plays nice
14:00He's the devil's right-hand man
14:02He can't let us pass
14:05Cause he's in absolute pain
14:07We won't bring those contracts
14:10Since he keeps killing us over and over and over again
14:13Oh my god, that's-
14:14I'm sorry I took so long with that song
14:16Admittedly, it's not King Dice himself that's the biggest challenge of his fight.
14:20It's his game.
14:21Before facing the king himself,
14:23he'll put you through a gauntlet of boss fights
14:24from the Tipsy Troop and Hoppus Pocus
14:27to Mr. Wheezy and Chip's bed again.
14:35While some spaces will bump up your health by one, which makes the whole thing a little bit easier,
14:40the hard part about this is doing all of these fights under that one health bar.
14:45You don't recover HP after fights unless you hit a space with a heart on it.
14:49And lord, have mercy on your soul
14:52if you somehow manage to screw up the very last roll that'll get you to the end space
14:57and you somehow land on start over.
15:01God help you.
15:07The devil.
15:14Of course, the final boss has got to be on a list like this,
15:17but we wouldn't exactly say the devil himself is the hardest boss in the game,
15:22but he definitely deserves to be on here.
15:24The devil basically takes you through a literal bullet hell kind of a fight,
15:28littering the screen with more and more projectiles as the fight progresses.
15:32The second and third phases will most likely trip you up
15:35as you'll have to watch for falling flaming chip tokens
15:37while the devil and his cronies continue their assault.
15:46It doesn't help that you lose platforms as the fight progresses,
15:49so watch your footing and watch where you're jumping.
15:59Rumor Honey Bottoms
16:07If there's one thing platforming fans can't stand,
16:10and I'm speaking from personal experience here too,
16:13it's auto-scrolling levels.
16:14Imagine the rage and resentment that festered inside of us
16:20after playing Honeycomb Herald.
16:23Players will have to keep up with falling platforms
16:25while the security bee and eventually rumor Honey Bottoms herself launch their attacks.
16:38She also spends quite a bit of time off-screen after casting her spells,
16:42which only extends the length of the fight.
16:45We're just glad that the rising honey is absent from the third phase,
16:49otherwise we may never have seen Cuphead all the way through to the end.
16:59Grim Matchstick
17:08Grim Matchstick has been known to be the most notorious of the bosses,
17:12save for one other section of the game,
17:14and given how the boss is based on the Mecha Dragon from Mega Man 2,
17:18we honestly weren't expecting it to be a cakewalk to begin with.
17:21Just like his inspiration,
17:22Grim Matchstick doesn't give you much room to avoid his attacks
17:25between the few cloudy platforms and oversized fireballs,
17:28and just like Honey Bottoms,
17:30his fight is an auto-scroller.
17:31Hooray!
17:32Two of them!
17:33In one game!
17:35I'm so...
17:36JOYED!
17:44It's a symphony of torment for even veteran players,
17:48but somehow,
17:49he's just not as bad
17:51compared to our final entry.
17:59The Tutorial!
18:05The Tutorial!
18:06The Tutorial is perhaps the most nightmarish,
18:09worst level ever-
18:11No, no, no, no, no, no.
18:13I can't.
18:13Even when I'm making a bad joke,
18:15I can't do this with a straight face.
18:17No, we here at Mojo Plays,
18:18we play video games.
18:20So, this was really no problem for us.
18:22We beat this in like,
18:2315 seconds.
18:25Come on.
18:25It's a tutorial.
18:31If you love games,
18:32be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game,
18:34Terrible Influence.
18:35Just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence.com.
18:38Terrible Influence is a satirical board game
18:41about the dark side of fame
18:42from the writer of the most popular girls in school
18:44and us, WatchMojo.
18:46Boom.
18:46I can make an apology video.
18:48Oh, you so would.
18:49Click on the link in the description
18:51to check out the game
18:51and be the first to play Terrible Influence.
18:55Now, here's our final entry.
18:57It's Dr. Call's Robot.
19:06Again, we have a boss fight
19:08heavily inspired by a Mega Man character.
19:10You know how Dr. Wily was intentionally made
19:13to be insanely difficult in Mega Man 7?
19:15Well, Dr. Call and his robot
19:17are pretty much that same level of absolute nonsense.
19:21For starters,
19:22the first phase sees you attacking the robot
19:24in three segments
19:25and as those segments are destroyed,
19:27new attacks are employed.
19:28The second phase is a bit calmer
19:30as the robot only sends homing missiles at you
19:32so there's a little bit more room to manage
19:34and shift your focus around.
19:42However, the third and final phase
19:44reveals the Mad Doctor himself
19:46and he'll unleash waves and waves of projectiles at you
19:50with his knockoff Chaos Emeralds
19:52while electrified barriers emerge
19:54from the top and bottom of the screen.
19:56He is harassment incarnate
19:59and he is by far the hardest Cuphead boss.
20:02God save us
20:04if the delicious last course resurrects him
20:07or introduces a similar boss.
20:09And if he really is like Dr. Wily,
20:11you know he's coming back at some point.
20:20Have you managed to beat any of these bosses yourself?
20:23Let us know down in the comments
20:24and don't forget to subscribe to Mojo Plays.
20:27We'll see you next time.
