00:10Hi, I'm Carly Rae Jepsen, and I'm here with The Hollywood Reporter.
00:13Three artists who I think influenced this album in a big way.
00:16Minnie Riperton, one can only try, but I definitely tried.
00:20And landed somewhere different, but I tried.
00:22I think always James Taylor, which you're not going to hear a ton of James Taylor,
00:26but I feel like there's the influence of just his storytelling.
00:30He's sort of my introduction to music with my family, so I think he's number two.
00:34And then number three, it's a really good question.
00:37I'm trying to think from the night side, what would influence the night side.
00:40My third one is ABBA.
00:42Not for the whole of night, but one song in particular comes to mind.
00:45And I think that forever I'm just going to say ABBA because I love a tight little top line,
00:50and they are the kings and queens of that, really.
00:52Day, dreamy, a little whimsical, and storytelling for night, dark, dancy, and experimental.
01:12I think the longest was actually one of the first songs, which was a song called No Labels,
01:18I Love You, that I wrote with my husband, who I didn't know was going to be my husband
01:23when I met him.
01:25But that was our first session together, and it took a very long time to, like, figure out
01:29how that song landed.
01:31It's actually funny because on the drive home from that song, I was plugging his name in,
01:35as you do, from a session to be like, who did I work with today?
01:38And his name's Cole, and I was driving, so I didn't want to text for very long.
01:41And the song's called No Labels, I Love You.
01:43So I wrote, Cole, I Love You.
01:44And I still have him saved that way today, all because of that song.
01:48And the quickest was probably Versailles.
01:52It felt really effortless, that song.
01:55And I feel like there's some magic when a song comes easy like that.
01:58It's a beautiful timestamp of my life.
02:01I didn't know all the things that were going to happen in my personal life were on the way,
02:05but those things were brewing and bubbling for sure.
02:08I think you can feel the excitement and the anticipation in the album.
02:11It's a wild thing to meet your, like, life partner.
02:14I think knowing him also allowed me to, like, think about, you know, how I got there,
02:18and sort of a little bit go back and be like, remember that? Remember that?
02:22And process sort of, you know, previous relationships in a different way, too.
02:26And, yeah, I think it's kind of just this incredible time of my life
02:31that I get to, like, almost, like, take a picture of with music, though.
02:35The thing I miss most about Doreen is the adrenaline of being on stage I really miss,
02:40and it's been a hot second.
02:41I think the first song, the walk onto stage, is a little bit of a rush,
02:47because you just don't know where the night's going to take you,
02:48and that always makes me feel really alive.
02:51I'm really excited to see my bandmates, because we know we've not exactly been in retirement,
02:55but we've all kind of gone.
02:56They go home, and I go make a record, and then we meet up again and say,
03:00ready to do this again?
03:01Let's go on the adventure.
03:03And so I'm really looking forward to seeing them.
03:13I think that my fans are the greatest fans ever.
03:17It's a true gift to have fans like that.
03:20They're, like, kind people.
03:21I feel like people come to the show and leave with, like, a couple friends,
03:24and I'm like, how did that happen?
03:26And I always feel like I have the best vantage point,
03:30just getting to, like, see everybody celebrating.
03:32And I think my job becomes more just, like, giving permission to be, like,
03:37everyone let loose.
03:38Like, let's go home sweaty.
03:40Emotion for me was just, like, a necessity.
03:43Like, it was really important for me to kind of get grounded in how I came into loving music,
03:49and what I had to offer to pop music.
03:51But it felt freeing to make that album.
03:53I know.
03:54But I definitely am the biggest fan of Heated Rivalry.
03:58I thought it was an incredible show.
04:00And actually, fun fact, Ilia is the name of my son.
04:04Maybe?
04:04Not maybe because of that show.
04:05I don't know.
04:06Who knows?
04:07Who knows?
04:07But actually, you know what?
04:09That would be a dream of mine, too.
04:10I'll just put it that way.
04:11It's going great.
04:12So 10 Things I Hate About You is a bit of a dream project.
04:16I can't think of anything I'd rather be working on.
04:18And it's such an incredible group of people.
04:21And I'm learning so much every day.
04:23It's, like, the right kind of challenging.
04:26It's funny because before I would come home and I'd be writing a song about my life or experiences.
04:31And now I'm, like, I'm writing a song about, like, a, you know, a soccer ball.
04:35And it turns into a disco ball.
04:36Maybe.
04:37And so it's a really, it's a different type of my brain to be playing with in terms of creativity.
04:42And it's just, it's a joy.
04:44I don't know if I'm a very good actor.
04:46But I, who knows?
04:48You know what?
04:48Never say never.
04:49That's what I'll say about the acting.
04:51I've done, like, musical theater type versions of acting.
04:54And I think when it's, like, bigger and louder and a little over the top, I have fun with that.
04:58But I don't know.
05:00I think if the camera came on and I was supposed to be a character, I would fumble.
05:21I'm so happy to write.
05:21We are, like, I'm perfect.
05:21We are.
05:21The way maybe I do.
05:22And we are.
05:27We are.
05:27We are.
